It was a sweet result for United, who since their return to Division 1 in 2010 had seen the Robins smash five goals past them in three of the previous five league meetings, including at Hassocks in December.

But that was never going to be the case at the Gullivers this time around as the Blues put in what they described as their best performance of the season, to which Hassocks had no answer.

With the fixture backlog having blighted the season and United under pressure to complete their home games early as they share the ground with the local cricket club, that meant a 2pm kick off so the reserves could play immediately afterwards.

This caused problems for the Robins as it ruled out James Westlake and his place on the right was taken by Stuart Brown. Also with Elliott Butler only fit enough to start on the bench, there was a first start since his return to the club for Lee Cooper.

It took just 11 minutes for Sidley to open the scoring when Greg Berry latched onto a Kenny Pogue ball over the top to calmly lob Simon Lehkyj.

United had dominated early proceedings but that opener seemed to shake the visitors into life as a break down the left from Jamie Weston drew a fine save from Greg Nessling.
