Bosham held at Beeding - but club are pitch perfect

The Southern Combination division-two game began at a breakneck pace with the Yellows surging forward.

Despite Marco Giambel-ardini sending a shot over the bar with keeper Ben Long well-beaten, the Yellows still looked dangerous with their youthful side showing good pace.

They took a deserved lead when the Robins’ defence, under pressure, sent a back pass to keeper Kieran Magee and attempted to clear – only to smash the ball against the onrushing Ben Whales. The rebound sailed in, with the Beeding striker left feeling the effects.

Bosham continued to find going tough. The hosts’ defensive line was led strongly by Jim Bacon and the Robins found it difficult to break down the well-organised side.

But approaching the interval, they worked some good chances.

First Edgington got through on goal, but his effort smacked back off the post and the hosts cleared the danger.

Then Alex Barnes stormed into the area to latch on to a sublime through-ball from James Wilson, but Long saved well to keep the hosts ahead at the break.

Shortly after the interval Bosham finally got their reward and it was Edgington who brought the scores level.

The tall striker cut in from the right and wrong-footed keeper Ben Long with a partially-scuffed shot from just inside the area to bring the Robins level.

Both sides attacked in search of a winner but neither could find the cutting edge.

Louis Bell brought the best out of Long with a stinging shot, while Alex Townley and Whales both went close for the hosts.

The Bosham player-manager – who runs his own landscape gardening business – doubles up at the club’s groundsman at Walton Lane, with support from Rhys Hughes at Mulberry Contractors.

Probee collected the accolade at the annual award ceremony at Sussex CCC ground in Hove alongside his assistant Neil Redman and club chairman Alan Price.

Bosham said they were delighted Probee had been recognised for the time and effort both he and Rhys gave on a voluntary basis in maintaining one of the best playing surfaces at step seven of the non-league pyramid on next-to-no budget – on a pitch which the local community also benefits from on non-matchdays.
