Breaking news: Ramsay takes time out

The 31-year-old striker/defender has told Rye manager Scott Price that he doesn’t want to be considered for the Sussex County Football League Division One club’s upcoming fixtures.

Price said: “He’s going to hang his boots up for the time being. He said he wasn’t enjoying it this year, he can’t get motivated and he’s struggling to get himself fit.”

Ramsay was a Brighton & Hove Albion player either side of the turn of the century and had a loan spell at Yeovil Town before spending five months at Dover Athletic.

He then scored 185 goals in 283 games during a highly successful six-year spell at Eastbourne Borough and went on to spend a season-and-a-half with Hastings United.

Ramsay joined Rye in early 2010 and helped the club to promotion from Sussex County League Division Two at the end of the 2009/10 season.

He was part of the Rye side which finished runners-up in Sussex Division One and John O’Hara League Challenge Cup, as well as reaching the FA Vase quarter-finals in the 2010/11 campaign.

Ramsay also won the Sussex RUR Charity Cup with Rye last season, but hasn’t started any of their last five matches even if he has scored in the last two.

He was sent-off for the first time in his career during the 2-0 defeat at Ringmer on Tuesday September 11 and is likely to face a lengthy ban having been charged for his comments to the referee following his dismissal.

“I’ll probably assess the situation after his ban comes through,” added Price, who is looking for a centre-half. “This year he hasn’t really been at his best, but the last two-and-a-half seasons he’s been invaluable to us.”

Price has brought Jordan Woodley back to Rye from Hastings United reserves and will “probably chuck him straight in” for the trip to Hassocks tomorrow (Saturday), but Nick Holland is out injured.
