Analysis: Who are the potential goalscorers for Graham Potter's Brighton and Hove Albion this season?

Who in Graham Potter's Brighton and Hove Albion squad can provide more goals to keep the Seagulls up for another season in the Premier League?

Potter said in his weekly press conference on Friday (September 11) that 'rather than look for the silver bullet that is out there, you think ‘can we improve those guys and help them score more?'.

'Those guys' that he was talking about included Neal Maupay, Aaron Connolly, Leandro Trossard and Steven Alzate.

With Glenn Murray leaving to join Watford and striker Florin Andone returning from his loan spell in Turkey with a serious knee injury and not available until at least January, Potter needs to find answers elsewhere in his squad.

Brighton only scored 39 goals in 38 games last term, but the manager believes he can coach his side to be more clinical in the opposition's box, so let's take a look at those individuals who could bolster Brighton's attacking threat this season.

Neal Maupay

The club's top scorer last season, scoring 10 goals in his first campaign both for Brighton and in the Premier League.

He scored some big goals, most notably against Arsenal both home and away, but he also missed some sitters, which he has to be converting at this level.

His xG (expected goals) last year was 14.7, according to infogol.net, which is testament to his positive movement off the ball to get into great positions, but it also highlights that he is not taking advantage of the space when he finds it.

Those extra expected 4/5 goals could have been worth some serious points if you look at how close Brighton's results were last season, in which they lost seven games by one goal and drew 14 in the league.

Potter can get more out of Maupay, and I think the Frenchman will be Brighton's top scorer again this season.

A partnership with Connolly, in my opinion, is Brighton's best attacking threat.

The 20-year-old Irishman came onto the Premier League scene with a bang last season against Spurs in October - scoring a brace on his league debut - but later fizzled out due to injuries, and then had difficulty getting any momentum back once recovered.

He is a natural goalscorer and a hard worker, two characteristics that make him such an exciting prospect, but is he ready to step up and provide his team with 10 goals in the Premier League?

The striker finished on three goals last season in 24 league appearances, which is abysmal. He looked out of his depth at times and struggling for confidence, although he makes up for poor stats with tireless running and pressing. But if he wants to keep his team up he's got to be aiming for double figures this season.

Potter does give youth a chance and I think Connolly will feature heavily again this term. If he can stay fit and get a good run of form and some luck early-on, the confidence will come and he has the potential to cause damage like he did in the under-23s setup.

Prediction: 7 goals

Steven Alzate

Another academy graduate from last season who broke into the first team, along with Connolly. The Columbian proved himself to be a really classy player with quick feet, good vision and an ability to read the game.

The 22-year-old has not been a prolific goalscorer so far in his career, with 64 appearances in total across the Premier League, Premier League 2 and League Two he has only scored six times and assisted seven times - none of which coming in the top flight.

But with Potter saying Alzate can be coached to score more, it surely means the player will be deployed in a more advanced attacking midfield role, which is better suited to his abilities and already gives him more of a chance of boosting his goal scoring stats from last season, where he featured mainly at right-wing back.

A player who, I think, given time, could be hitting double figures in both the goals and assists department. This season is a huge opportunity for him to repay Potter's faith and show the Brighton fans what he can do.

Prediction: 6 goals 5 assists

Leandro Trossard

The Belgian scored five times and assisted three times in 31 Premier League appearances last season, which maybe isn't the return Brighton were looking for after they signed him in the summer of 2019.

In the season before he signed for Brighton - in the Jupiler Belgian League and the Europa League - he scored 22 times and set up 11 goals in 47 appearances for Genk. These statistics are a good indicator that there is yet to come from the playmaker.

He's similar to Alzate in that he is a technically gifted player who, after one full season in England under his belt, has the potential to improve on his stats.

Prediction: 8 goals 5 assists

Overall, Potter has shown he has what it takes to keep a side up in the Premier League while simultaneously changing the whole philosophy of a team, an impressive feat. Now his style has been established, and the players mentioned above have Premier League experience, you would think they will improve this season and help push Brighton up the table.
