Connolly hobbled off during the second half of Ireland s 3-2 defeat by Serbia on Wednesday and was ruled out of tomorrow's World Cup qualifier with Luxembourg at the Aviva Stadium.

The forward was an injury doubt ahead of the Serbia loss, having not played for his club for several weeks due to a back spasm and then cracked ribs.

The Ireland manager Stephen Kenny previously admitted Connolly's inclusion was a gamble and that he was "undercooked".

Today the FAI confirmed the 21-year-old will miss tomorrow's game and also next Tuesday's friendly with Qatar in Hungary.

It appeared the Brighton man - who has two Premier League goals this season - was struggling with cramp and a calf issue.

The Serbia defeat was Connolly's first competitive match since February 27, where he started and played the first 60 minutes of Albion's loss at West Brom.

He will hope to be available for Brighton's next Premier League fixture at Manchester United on April 4.
