Brighton goalkeeper Maty Ryan issues this defiant message after Crystal Palace loss

Albion created plenty of chances against Roy Hodgson’s resolute team as Neal Maupay, Solly March and Lewis Dunk all went close but Jordan Ayew’s effort on 70 minutes proved to be the difference.

Ryan said, “It’s difficult to take, it means so much to the fans as well, so that makes it all the more disappointing. We had plenty of chances and that’s the key, we lacked the clinical touch to put one away and when you don’t do that you leave yourself vulnerable.

“It is more of a worry if the opportunities were not coming, I think there would be more an issue if that was the case. We definitely had the beating of them, but for whatever reason we weren’t able to put one away, or even two or three.

“Sometimes things don’t go your way but we have to believe that it will change."

Brighton are just one point above the relegation zone but a major plus has been the determined displays and desire to fight to the final whistle, at no stage this season have Albion not played for their manager or thrown in the towel.

The Australian goalkeeper believes that spirit - alongside the experienced heads in the squad - can help Brighton in their tricky upcoming fixtures, starting with Wolves at Molineux Stadium this Saturday.

“We’ve been in this situation before," Ryan said. "Each day and each game are a lesson and we have to keep pushing through the adversity until you overcome it. That next thing for us is getting a win and I do believe that it’s not far away.

"Nothing has changed. We have got to do whatever needs to be done in order to stay up. Regardless of the Palace result, we still need a few results, so until that final game, that final whistle of the last game of the season, we are going to do everything we can to get the results.

“You see over the course of a season if you don’t beat teams around you, then you go and beat teams above you which is just the way the sport goes.

“We need to stop conceding goals for one. You don’t concede goals and then at least you are only going to draw rather than lose. It has been a bit frustrating we have only got five clean sheets to our name this season."

Albion's recent run of results has been a concern and they are the only team in the Premier League yet to record a victory in 2020. Potter's men have lost three and drawn five so far this year and their last victory and last clean sheet was against Bournemouth on 28 December.

“It doesn’t play on our minds,"Ryan said. "People in moments go through bad patches, individuals, teams but it takes one game to rectify that. Once you do, all that noise previously quietens down.

"I don’t think about superstitions, it is not because it is a new year or anything. We are just not doing enough to win the game. When luck is not going our way, we have to continue working hard to try and change that.”
