Brighton player closes in on new deal, Defender agrees exit

Wednesday’s defeat to Premier League giants Manchester City has left Brighton in a bit of a precarious position in terms of their battle to avoid the drop this term.

Graham Potter’s men are now 17th in the table, and will slip into the bottom three if Fulham win either of their two games in hand.

Understandably, Albion are looking to strengthen their ranks before the transfer window closes at the beginning of February, and there has been a flurry of transfer speculation in recent days involving the Seagulls.

The most obvious story involves South American midfielder Moises Caicedo and his seemingly imminent arrival on the south coast, but one of the biggest coups Brighton may pull off could involve keeping hold of one of their top talents, rather than bringing a fresh face through the door.

According to a number of reports, Tariq Lamptey is on the verge of signing a new long term deal with Albion, and could double his wages in the process.

Securing the services of the precocious 20-year-old would be a major win for the Seagulls, especially considering the level of interest that he has supposedly been attracting in recent times.

Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, and even European champions Bayern Munich have been linked with the defender, who only signed for his current side over the summer.

Nonetheless, this has been a breakout campaign for the 20-year-old, who joined Albion to relatively little fanfare on deadline day.

Since then, he has garnered widespread praise from high-profile pundits such as Jamie Carragher, Jamie Redknapp, and Patrice Evra, who praised the starlet’s aggression and singled him out as a “really exciting player” back in September.

The stats back up Lamptey’s meteoric rise too, with Whoscored ranking him as Albion’s third-best player this season, bettered only by Solly March and Yves Bissouma. Not bad at all for a player who had just one Premier League appearance to his name before making his switch to the south coast.

While the truth is that new additions to Potter's squad would probably get more pulses racing around the Amex, tying Lamptey down could prove to be an exceptional piece of business.
