Danny Welbeck scored on 86 minutes to claim a point for Brighton after Sheffield United took the lead through Jayden Bogle on his Premier League debut.
United were reduced to 10-men on 40 minutes when John Lundstram was dismissed for Chris Wilder's men following a nasty challenge on Brighton defender Joel Veltman.
Brighton appeared to heading for a painful home loss until Welbeck, who came on as a second half sub, fired home from close range.
