Brighton may have to keep players Ezequiel Schelotto, Beram Kayal and Leon Balogun on the books beyond the end of the current contracts as the coronavirus pandemic halts football.

Fifa and Uefa are looking at the possibility of extending all deals that are due to end on June 30, until the Premier League season and leagues across the world can conclude.

The Premier League is suspended until at least April 30 at the earliest but another extension is expected. The last time Brighton played was their 0-0 draw at Wolves at the beginning of March.

FIFA are proposing all contracts are extended until the relevant domestic league is finished. Uefa are also keen to get plans in place so they are ready when football can resume.

A statement read: "Uefa has invited the general secretaries of its 55 members associations to a video conference on Wednesday, April 1 at midday to share an update on the progress made by the two working groups that were created two weeks ago and to discuss options identified with regards to the potential rescheduling of matches.

"The meeting will look at developments across all Uefa national team and club competitions, as well as discussing progress at Fifa and European level on matters such as player contracts and the transfer system."

Player contracts tend to run from July 1 to June 30 and usually they are released when their deals expire. Also, players who have signed pre-contract agreements will officially join their new clubs on July 1.

At Brighton Schelotto, Kayal and Balogun (on loan at Wigan) are currently set to leave at the end of June. It's unclear at this stage if a new player or players were due to arrive at the Amex for the beginning of July.

Albion also have 18 players on loan - whose loan deals were due to end either at the end of May or June - including Jurgen Locadia, Florin Andone, Ben White and Anthony Knockaert.

It starts to get complicated if the 2019/20 season goes on beyond the June 30 cut-off date and Uefa are eager to find a swift solution.

Ezequiel Schelotto: Contract expires: June 30, 2020. Brighton may well be keen to keep Schelotto for as long as it takes the season to finish. The 30-year-old has fought back bravely from a career threatening knee injury and has forced his way into Graham Potter's matchday squad and starting XI.

Leon Balogun is on loan at Wigan. His contract with Albion was due to end on June 30.Leon Balogun is on loan at Wigan. His contract with Albion was due to end on June 30.

Has made four starts this season and four appearances from the bench. A useful squad member particularly if Brighton need to play many games in quick succession to finish the season.

Beram Kayal: Contract expires: June 30, 2020. Returned early from a loan spell early from Charlton due to a knee injury. The 31-year-old has been a great player for Albion but is unlikely to feature if the remaining matches go ahead.

Leon Balogun: Contract expires: June 30, 2020. Currently on loan at Wigan Athletic and one of the many players caught in limbo. Will he remain on loan and see out Wigan's Championship campaign or will Brighton have to extend his contract?

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."

But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis. In return we will continue to forensically cover the local news - not only the impact of the virus but all the positive and uplifting news happening in these dark days.

In addition, please write to your MP urging the Government to provide some additional financial support for local newspapers and their websites like this one and ensuring that supermarkets continue to stock them. I cannot stress enough how important such an intervention would be.

We thank all our readers and advertisers for their understanding and support - and we wish YOU all the best in the coming weeks. Keep safe, and follow the Government advice. Thank you.
