Brighton transfer news: EFL boss wants reunion with Albion player, Seagulls miss out on teenage midfielder

After a frustrating performance in front of goal against Fulham in midweek, Brighton manager Graham Potter might be forgiven for trying to bring another striker into the club before the transfer deadline passes on Monday.

Instead, it looks as if there could be a forward heading for the exit door at the Amex in the coming days – or at least, kind of.

Glenn Murray has been on loan at Watford since the beginning of the campaign, but thus far, has struggled for game time at Vicarage Road.

The veteran hitman has been limited to just five appearances in the Championship, four of which have been from the bench and the most recent of which came in October.

Needless to say, his current situation is far from a satisfactory one, but he could be in line for a reunion with former Albion boss Chris Hughton.

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon claimed on his personal Twitter account on Thursday that Hughton’s current side, Nottingham Forest, are interested in landing the 37-year-old as they look to drag themselves of a Championship relegation scrap.

Given that Murray has been training on his own in recent weeks, and factoring in his prior working relationship with Hughton, a potential move – whether it be on loan or on a permanent basis – would surely represent an improvement for the player.

You’d fancy him to offer something useful too, despite his age.

Murray average 0.32 goals per 90 minutes last term – not bad at all considering that his xG was only 0.03 higher per game, as per Wyscout.

Elsewhere, it looks as if the Seagulls have missed out on signing Bolton Wanderers teenager Regan Riley.

According to Football Insider, Graham Potter’s side were keen on the midfielder, but have beaten to his signature by Norwich City.

A fee of around £250,000 has been agreed, with a three-year deal reportedly in place.

How strong Albion’s interest actually was in the player is not abundantly clear, but it is understood that he had caught the eye of scouts on the south coast.

At 18, Riley has made just one senior appearance for his boyhood club this term – a 53-minute cameo in the EFL Trophy.
