Brighton should be in a Champions League spot...that is if they scored all of their expected goals this season.
Albion are desperate for a ruthless striker.
Potter's men are currently in fourth place in the expected points table, but in the actual table they sit in 14th position.
Every other club's expected points total and actual positions are quite in sync, but Brighton are the anomaly of the league - and even across Europe - because they are TWENTY points behind their expected points tally.
Expected Points measures the number of points a team could have expected to have taken from a game, based on the scoring opportunities (xG) that they created and conceded in that game.
If that Leicester team of 15/16 can escape relegation and then go onto win the league, then this Brighton team can certainly find a striker and push for Europe.
But it's easier said than done, where does a club like Brighton, in the midst of a pandemic, find this silver-bullet that has eluded them since the decline of Glenn Murray?
What's the current problem?
Not enough goals, lack of confidence and quality in the box.
The main culprit for this is Neal Maupay. Although he is the club's top goal scorer this season, he has severely underwhelmed.
The Frenchman's xG stats say he should really be on 14 goals, so in essence he's missed around six sitters.
When you take into account Brighton have drawn the most games in the league (13) and have lost a massive 20 points while in winning positions, it shows you how important those missed chances have been.
There have been other terrible misses, Aaron Connolly is guilty of this, Welbeck's missed a couple, Gross too, but as the numbers say, Maupay has been the main offender.
Strikers. But who? Here's a look at five strikers from across Europe who are producing positive numbers in terms of goals and expected goals:
1. Simy
The Nigerian plays for Crotone in Serie A who are set to be relegated from Italy's top division. The 28-year-old has scored 19 goals in 34 appearances so far this season, overperforming his expected goals by 3.5, which is impressive. Although he is getting older, his market value is currently £3.6million and he is out of contract next yera according to transfermrkt.com. This transfer would be great value for money if it comes off and is definitely worth a gamble for any team looking for goals.
2. Boulaye Dia
The Senegalese striker has scored 14 goals this season in Ligue 1 for Reims, overperforming his expected goals by one. The 24-year-old has one year left on his contract and has a market value of around £12.6million. Reims are currently sat in 11th place in the French league, so it may be easier to persuade him to leave. According to fbref.com, Dia is similar striker to Simy.
3. Tammy Abraham
A name that has been banded about quite about by Brighton fans. And for good reason too. It would be a proper coup if Albion did pull this off. I think Abraham would set his career alight... if he is willing to step down to move forwards. Abraham is a proven finisher, but as we see so often at the big clubs, there are world class players throughout the squad which leads to talent like his sat on the bench. The main issue is his market value which is currently £36million, and one would assume his wages are high. Once again this one may only come off if Brighton sell one of their own stars to fund the move.
4. Ivan Toney
Another name who has been heavily linked with Brighton. The 25-year-old has scored an impressive 30 goals in the Championship this season with Brentford, who will be fighting it out in the play-offs again to reach the Premier League. If Brentford fail to get promoted then it may just persuade Toney to move on, as he is clearly too good for the Championship and is reaching his peak age. His current market value is around £16million according to transfermrkt.com It's easy to draw comparisons to Maupay and say well if Maupay has been underwhelming then won't Toney be the same? It's a good point, but I'd use Ollie Watkins as a counter argument and say maybe Brighton just signed the wrong Brentford striker. There are hits and misses; nothing is ever guaranteed.
