Murray is the club’s leading post-war goalscorer with 111 goals across two spells and switched to the Hornets with a year left to run on his Albion contract.

The 36-year-old striker was a firm favourite with the Albion faithful who were sad to bid farewell to the striker who helped fire them back into the Premier League and then played a huge role in maintaining their top flight status.

Murray scored just once in the Premier League for Albion last season and was mainly used from the bench. He was unlikely to feature regularly for Graham Potter's team this coming season and Murray decided a switch to Vladimir Ivic's Championship outfit was the best move to make at this stage of his career.

Here's what Albion fans had to say on his surprise departure:

@SavingMatyRyan: @GM_83 I’m not really sure what to say, other than thank you. You will forever be a legend at #BHAFC and you’ve been such a fundamental part of our club. Please come back and retire with us, we owe you everything. Once a Seagull, always a seagull. ✋✋✋ GM17.

@wilka1983: Strange that Murray is a loan rather than free transfer. Maybe we can recall in January if needed?

@Brightonfan: Now the news has sunk in. Thank you for absolutely everything Glenn. A true Albion legend, 103 goals for our great club. One of our greatest strikers, memories will live a lifetime! Good luck at Watford. #bhafc

@colincurryer: Glenn Murray’s departure to Watford on loan leaves us with only 2 strikers (plus Andone). At times like this we need to have faith in the recruitment team and the whole club that things are in place to get re-enforcements in before the start of the season. #bhafc

@LaurenLaing94: Gutted. Definition of a club legend! Thank you @GM_83! ⚪️⚪️

#BHAFC

@Spying: Hmm... I guess we might have a new striker then. Thank you Glenn, you’ve given us so many happy memories.

@benhollebon: the right thing for someone as class as @GM_83 to get his deserved game time but will be so sad not seeing him in the #bhafc kit.

@RaddReynolds: Murray and Deeney upfront.. Won’t the most mobile but that’d be a leathal pairing if you can get the ball in the box! #wfc #ffsmurray #bhafc

@BNWdynamite: Gutted @GM_83 is off again. Go give 'em hell in the championship you legend. #BHAFC

@thegilbertros: Looks to be a massive squad ‘restructuring’ exercise taking place at #BHAFC Some big wage earners now off the payroll - Duffy, Murray, Knockeart & Montoya.

Every chance we could see two ‘attackers’ signed in the next days. Not many of Hughton’s regulars left now!

@colincurryer: Replying to @OfficialBHAFC @GM_83 @WatfordFC

Gutted to see you go (again) Glenn but you deserve to play out the rest of you career. I wish you all the luck in the world next season at Watford. Hopefully, we get drawn to play Watford in the Cup and we can give you the send off you deserve. #bhafc

@1901Nick: A little of me has died inside hearing @GM_83 has departed #BHAFC #legend

@chrisjp23_BHA: @GM_83 pure class throughout the years. thanks for the time you spent at the club. just need a statue of you at the ground like david silva. all jokes aside, i guess this loan move will finally allow you to work on your first touch #BHAFC

@GM_83 @WatfordFC: That's most of the promotion winning team gone the end of an era. Good luck @GM_83 thanks for the memories...always a seagull #BHAFC
