Potter is often one to spring a few surprises but supporters were surprised to see no Neal Maupay, Danny Welbeck or Ben White in the starting XI to face Mike Arteta's Arsenal.

Once again there's no Maty Ryan in the match day squad as Robert Sanchez keeps his place between the sticks.

Davy Propper makes his first start of the season in the Premier League and there are also rare starts for Alexis Mac Allister, Bernardo and Ali Jahanbakhsh.

Brighton XI: Sanchez, Webster, Dunk, Burn; Veltman, Propper, Bissouma, Mac Allister, Bernardo; Gross, Jahanbakhsh.

Subs: Steele, White, Connolly, Maupay, Trossard, Welbeck, March, Zeqiri, Molumby.

Here's how Brighton fans reacted on social media:

@TogetherBHA: No striker in the starting XI, Welbeck and Maupay played two days ago, Aaron not in the 11. Surely, SURELY we'll be making serious moves for a striker in January. #BHAFC

@mike_bentley4 I was gonna have a day off drinking today but now I’ve seen that team selection

@BRabbetts: I see no strikers were drawn out of the hat in today’s Graham Potter Team Selection Lottery #BHAFC

@MissWadgeY6NQT: Apparently you don’t need to start a striker to score goals. #BHAFC

@SimonRusbridge: Potter shows he’s lost the plot

@bhafcbreaking: No recognised striker on the pitch? We are literal playing for a 0-0 draw.

@grummittsgloves: I hope I live to eat my words, but what the heck is that #bhafc team selection for tonight all about

@seagullsuk: Looks like we have set out to lose this one. What an incredibly unbalanced line up - extraordinary. If we lose this only one person needs to look in the mirror. Hope I end up eating my words. #BHAFC

@SavingMatyRyan: This is either going to be a complete and utter shambles, or a work of complete genius. There’s no in between #BHAFC

@rlaingalbion: How can you have no strikers on the pitch but 4 on the bench? Can’t make the excuse of tiredness when 2 of them didn’t play against West Ham.
