Earlier in the game, Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah also saw his goal ruled out for offside by officials at Stockley Park.

Just seconds before the full-time whistle and with help from VAR, Brighton were awarded a late penalty after Andy Robertson made contact with Danny Welbeck’s foot in the box.

Pascal Grob dispatched the spot-kick to earn Graham Potter a point against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Reds man Milner – who suffered an injury during the game – took to Twitter following the result to express his frustrations.

He said” “It’s ‘clear and obvious’ we need a serious discussion about VAR. Sure I’m not alone in feeling like they are falling out of love with the game in its current state.”

Responding to the former England star’s comment, BBC pundit Lineker said: “Absolutely. I was very pro the idea originally, but happy to admit I was wrong. It’s actually changed the sport and certainly not for the better.”

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table following the draw, but the winner of Chelsea’s clash against Tottenham can overtake the leaders, with the pair facing off this Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
