Midfielder Steven Alzate, 21, has been called up to the Colombia under-23 side ahead of their friendlies against Peru next week and 19-year-old striker Aaron Connolly has been selected for the Republic of Ireland under-21s.

Alzate received his first call up after impressive displays in the Premier League for Brighton at Newcastle and then at Chelsea. “Although I’m in England, I feel more Colombian. It would be an honour to play for Colombia,” said the attacking midfielder, who was born in London to Colombian parents.

Connolly, who has also been promoted to the first team this season, and Jayson Molumby, who’s on loan at Millwall, have also been called up to represent the Republic of Ireland under-21s. Shane Duffy has been left out of the Ireland senior squad due to a calf injury he picked up in Brighton's 3-1 league cup loss against Aston Villa. Ireland will take on Italy at home on October 10 before a trip to Iceland five days later.
