Albion were poor in the first half at Bramall Lane but improved after the break and created enough chances to at least claim a point.

The best of the opportunities fell to top scorer Neal Maupay, who was twice denied by home keeper Aaron Ramsdale and then skied a late chance high over the bar from close range.

It would take an unusual set of results to drag Brighton back into the relegation places but Dunk's men do have a tricky run-in with Leeds, Wolves, West Ham, Man City and Arsenal still to play.

“It was a missed opportunity at Sheffield United to put some distance between us and the bottom three. We have got to give some credit to them, they didn't concede and were difficult to breakdown,” said Dunk.

“We conceded a poor goal in the first half which is difficult to come back from against a team who will sit in and make it hard for you. It proved too much in the end

“We dominated possession, we created a few chances, but we didn't put them in the back of the net, it's a loss we need to move on from.

“We have got five games now that we need to make the most of to secure our Premier League status for next season.”

“Every game is tough in this league,” the Albion skipper said. “We have shown this season that we can beat the big teams and we have got a few of them left. We are confident in our dressing room that we will be fine and we have got to keep fighting until the end.

“Everyone in the dressing room wants to get us over the line. We have got a good team spirit, good players and manager here. We know we have got enough to stay in this league.”
