Albion fans felt Brighton's Premier League opening day 3-1 home defeat to Chelsea highlighted the club's need to bring in a new striker

There were plenty of positives to take from the display as Brighton controlled large chunks of possession against a Chelsea team that spent more than £200m during the summer transfer window.

An error from Steven Alzate in the first half led to a penalty that was easily dispatched by Jorginho.

Brighton deservedly levelled after the break through Leandro Trossard but a belting strike from Reece James and a deflected goal from Kurt Zouma saw Frank Lampard's men leave with the points.

The displays of Tariq Lamptey, who was excellent on the right, Solly March and Yves Bissouma were cause for optimism but injuries to Adam Lallana (cramping) and Ben White (ankle) are a concern and fans will anxiously awaiting news of injury updates.

@BrightonLeccyTV Good stats , Positive performance Disappointing result @OfficialBHAFC need to be able to score more than one per game in order to make the progress that matches their possession/play.

@MikeKing14_ Is Maupay - Connolly - Andone - Gyökeres a good enough strike force heading into the season or are further signings up top needed? #BHAFC

@HarryStevenson1 So many positives to take away for #bhafc tonight. Chelsea will be pushing for top spot at the end of the season, so these aren’t the matches to go through with a fine toothed comb. Lamptey, Bissouma & March were top knotch! Great to have you back @OfficialBHAFC

@TweetingSeagull Seen a lot of #bhafc drawing (mostly negative) conclusions from tonight’s defeat. But doing so after 1 game of the season gone, which was against a team that qualified for the champions league last season & then spent over £200m on new players isn’t the game to do that #bhache

@AlexanderHills: Bissouma and Lamptey are elite. That is all #bhafc

@NorthStandChat #BHAFC Don’t know what people are complaining about, we were good today.

@joshhsojjosh Edouard, King, Wood, Barnes, Deeney - all of them bury the chances maupay and dunk missed tonight

@AlbionAnalytics Tariq Lamptey (‘00) impressed again tonight - against former club Chelsea. His involvement in all phases of the game is not only entertaining but also makes him an effective wing back.

@AlbionAl1 Frustrating night. Was excited before kick off and there were some positives but same old story up top. #bhafc

@NevilleGoldie Only three points off top spot!

@tomhebbo: Need a different option up top, crying out for a Jimenez type forward #bhafc

@BennettsField Solly March has a lot of critics but I thought he was excellent tonight. The left wing back really suits him I think. Deserves a run in that spot. #bhafc

@Owen_S10 I beg White isn’t injured #bhafc

@matthewnlampard Disappointed to lose, but pleased with the performance. #BHAFC controlled the majority of the game, but once again individual errors and a lack of quality in the final third have cost us. If we can address those issues, I think we could be in for an exciting season...

Brighton boss Graham Potter felt the game was decided by “fine margins”, including Lewis Dunk’s missed chance when his side trailed by only one goal, and said there were plenty of positives they could take from the game.

“There are lots of positives for us in terms of the overall game, but we’re disappointed of course because we conceded three goals,” Potter told Sky Sports.

“The first one is a mistake, but the response after that was really good and I thought first half we were probably the better team, got the equaliser and were probably on the front foot.

“Then the second (Chelsea) goal was a bit of a blow. We had a really good chance at 2-1 as well and it’s just those fine little margins that ultimately, against the big teams, you need to turn in your favour if you want a positive result.

“In the end, we’re happy with lots of things but disappointed with three goals against and no points.”
