It was a controversial decsiion but the referee deemed that Connolly had initiated the contact.

Brighton had earlier taken the lead in the first half when Neal Maupay dinked home a penalty after Tariq Lamptey was fouled in the box by Bruno Fernandes.

Here's how Albion fans reacted on social media:

@poidy_1901: If I take my unbiased head off, as soon as I saw the replay I did think it looked soft. #BHAFC

@aliwatkins202 If that was at the other end, it would’ve been given. #bhafc

@PaulColburn25 As much as I hate to say it, the correct decision. Connolly to interested in the penalty rather than the shot #bhafc

@Jackp93 That’s a joke. Absolute joke. Talk about giving the game to United. Clear foul anywhere else on the pitch.

@NaderHussein10 I’m going to do something I never do & give great credit to the referee. Chris Kavanagh didn’t have a great view of the coming together, and once he looked at it again he saw something he didn’t see the first time. That’s what VAR is meant for. #BHAFC #MUFC #BHAMUN #PL
