'We played into their hands' Neal Maupay pinpoints exactly where it unravelled at Everton

Brighton striker Neal Maupay scored his fourth Premier League goal of the season at Everton but looked a frustrated figure as he assessed the damage after a 4-2 loss at Goodison Park.

Dominic Calvert-Lewis celebrated his England call-up with his ninth of the season and the impressive James Rodriguez netted a second half brace as Brighton suffered their third defeat from the opening four Premier League matches.

Defender Yerry Mina was also on target for the hosts as he headed home a cross from Rodriguez to give Everton the lead at the break after Neal Maupay had levelled for Albion.

Yves Bissouma, back into the team after a three match suspension, scored a well taken second for Albion to make it 4-2 at the end.

"The scoreline was tough for us, 4-2 is quite big," said Maupay. "But against big teams like them with good players, if you make mistakes they take them (chances).

"That's what happened today, we were a bit sloppy at times. Every time we made mistakes, it was only a few, but they scored on each of them which was a bit disappointing.

"We need to look back at what is working and what is not and defensively we are conceding too many goals. But it's not the keeper, not the defender it is everyone.

"On the second it was a poor clearance from Solly (March) and then me and then they end up with a freekick and they score. So it is just those mistakes.

"Against the top teams you cannot do that. We played a bit into their hands in the second half. We knew they wanted to press us in the middle of the pitch and we still tried to play.

"We lose one or two balls and they score. We need to look back at the game and see what we need to change for the future."

The Premier League will pause now due to the upcoming international break.

Brighton, who have three points from four matches, are next in action at Crystal Palace on October 18 and Maupay believes it will give everyone a chance to take stock and learn from their mistakes.

"We are on the right track,"added the Frenchman. "Everyone is working hard and everyone agrees with what the manager wants to bring to the club and to the team.

"But if we want to come to the Premier League and say we will beat every team it is not possible because they are top players top teams.

"We have just played Everton, Manchester United and Chelsea, these are big teams, they have got top players and it is no shame to lose against them.

"There are positives to take from these and lots of things to learn from it.

"But we are working hard in the right direction and we keep believing in us and the manager, we'll be fine."
