The Red Devils led 2-0 at half-time through Paul Pogba's penalty and Marcus Rashford's emphatic finish just before the break.

March admitted Rashford's goal was 'a killer' just before half-time but Albion responded well in the second half and got back in the game when Pascal Gross scored from Davy Propper's cross 18 minutes from time.

Brighton then pushed for an equaliser but United stood firm to hold on for all three points and have now beaten the Seagulls three times at Old Trafford in the last 14 months.

Albion lost 1-0 in the Premier League and 2-0 in the FA Cup quarter-finals at United last season and after the 2-1 defeat this afternoon, March said: "Every time we've come here we've been a bit frustrated. We kept the ball, had quite a bit of possession and had a few chances and obviously you've got to take them against the big teams.

"It's a little bit frustrating because we pushed well at the end and could have got the equaliser."

Pogba went down under a Gaetan Bong challenge for United's first goal from the penalty spot and March said: "I haven't seen it again, so I don't know. It looked a bit soft when I first saw it but I'd have to see it again."

As for United doubling their lead just before half-time, March added: "That was a bit of a killer, really. To come in at 2-0 down away to a top four, top five team is a big ask.

"We did well and came close but to go 2-0 down was frustrating and both of the goals were a bit frustrating.

"But we pushed well at the end and it was maybe just that final pass. We had one or two good chances in the first half as well and you've got to take them to get anything, even a draw.

"But the last two weeks against Liverpool and United we've done well and have been a bit unlucky not to get a draw from either of them.

"They were relieved to hear the final whistle because we were pushing and putting the pressure on. That shows how well we did."

Albion are yet to pick up a point on the road against a top-six side in the Premier League and March admits that is something the team are keen to address.

He said: "Looking at last season, we were a long way off and now we're closer to these bigger teams and that away result will come soon. Hopefully we can do it in one of our next away games against a top side.

"We've got Tottenham and Arsenal to still play away, so maybe we can target them and get points. That would be a big step for us."
