The young Seagulls were bidding to reach the quarter-finals for just the second time in the club's history but were sunk by two early goals at Goodison Park.

Albion's young guns had beaten West Ham and Manchester United to set up the tie with Everton but Michael Collins gave the Toffees the lead after 11 minutes and Ellis Simms made it 2-0 just 60 seconds later.

Brighton looked to get back into the game and Ryan Longman had a shot blocked midway through the first half.

Longman went close again just before the hour when he had an effort blocked before Everton cleared the ball off the line.

In a spell of pressure, Danny Cashman headed over and Longman curled a shot wide.

Albion continued to press but Sam Packham had a shot blocked from close range and Lorent Tolaj headed over as Everton held on to reach the quarter-finals.

Everton will meet West Brom in the last eight.
