Buller at his best to rescue Midhurst

Midhurst met one of the strongest teams in the division in Oakwood and came away with a point from an entertaining 3-3 draw in division two of the Sussex League.

Oakwood are desperate to regain their division-one status while Midhurst are intent on collecting points to avoid the prospect of another season of struggle.

The visitors opened the scoring despite Gerald Manville seeming to help the ball in with his hand.

Oakwood’s Mark Holmes was shown a yellow card for a strong tackle on Lewis Hyde but the hosts couldn’t find an equaliser before the break.

On 53 minutes, Toby Gilbert put the ball into the Midhurst net but an alert linesman had indicated an Oakwood player was offside.

Two minutes later, though, it was 2-0 as a penalty was given for a Harry Farr tackle and Gilbert put the spot-kick beyond Midhurst keeper Ian Knight. A few minutes later, a good pass from Ian Saunders was met by Garry Buller to make it 2-1.

Seventy minutes had passed when Sean Dummer laid on a perfect pass for Buller to score his second of the afternoon.

Eight minutes from time Gerald Melville restored Oakwood’s lead – only for Dummer to convert a Hyde pass for 3-3.

In the final few minutes Buller was upended in the Oakwood area but the referee didn’t consider it warrented another penalty.
