Bosham 4 Hurstpierpoint 0

Southern Combination division two

AFTER many weeks without football, action returned to Walton Lane as Bosham chalked up an impressive win over Hurstpierpoint on a blustery day.

With Bosham players itching to get going it was no surprise they came flying out of the blocks t and with less than a minute gone, Nick Edgington was felled in the box and a penalty awarded by referee Chris White.

James Wilson stepped up but the kick was easily saved by keeper Gary Bushnell.

Ian Costello showed real passion for the Blues but it was the Reds asking all the questions as the half wore on.

Dave Bryant went close with a header and Jake Lafferty had two decent, efforts on goal but the deadlock couldn’t be broken before the interval.

Hurstpierpoint had not had a single shot on target in the entire half and the second period was set to bring more of the same.

Ten minutes into the second half the Robins took the lead. Again Edgington was fouled in the area and a second spot-kick awarded.

This time, Graeme Dowden stepped up and confidently dispatched the penalty, wrongfooting Bushnell with ease.

Wave after wave of attack saw the Blues defence under incessant pressure and the Reds scored three more times in the final quarter of the match.

First, Alex Barnes got in on the act. Having come off the bench, the diminutive midfielder immediately got involved and when Dowden spotted him making an adventurous run into the box, he found him with an expert pass and Barnes did the rest.

Soon Matt Docherty surged through and unselfishly tried to find Dowden. His effort was parried by Bushnell but only into the path of the sliding Edgington at the far post and he slid the ball into an empty net.

In injury time, Dowden got his second. With the Blues defence at sixes and sevens, Bosham piled forward and a melee ensued in the area. The ball fell kindly form Dowden who drove the ball low into the bottom corner.

A potentially-tricky trip to Rustington awaits this week.

BOSHAM: Magee, Probee, Redman, Blanshard, Bryant, Wilson, Edgington, Docherty, Lafferty, Bell, Dowden. Subs: Fewell, Giambelardini, Barnes.

Haywards Heath 8 Selsey 2

Southern Combination division one

IT was a day to forget for the Blues at Haywards Heath.

The home side, playing into the wind in the first half, started well and with just five minutes on the clock the deadlock was broken. Max Miller’s strike was well saved but Callum Saunders was there to fire the ball home.

Heath’s lead was doubled on ten minutes as Saunders cut the ball back to Jamie Weston. His shot was saved but Miller stabbed home the loose ball.

Selsey got one back through a long throw that led to confusion in the box and went in off home player Bailie Rogers.

On 32 minutes Saunders was brought down just outside the area and Jamie Weston’s free-kick was whipped it towards the far post which it hit and went in.

With seconds on the half remaining, after Selsey had been denied a second by a superb save, Josh Bryant burst forward and crossed for Miller to put the game all but beyond Selsey.

On 84 minutes, Heath switched off as a free-kick from deep found its way to the back post for a simple tap-in for James Kilhams.

Heath went straight back up the other end and Saunders teed up Weston for goal number eight.
