Teams are now looking to build their squad for next season – even though they do not know when it will start.

Lovett has already started talking to players who he says have an interest in coming to the Green Elephants Stadium.

He told Middy Sport: “I’ll be looking to add about four or five players and trying to make sure I keep some of the players that I inherited and some that I brought in when I took over as manager. I felt we started to get a good mix with the team just before lockdown and more consistent with our results.

“As any manager would do when he has a fresh start to the season, I’ll be looking to add a few players that will compliment what we have started.

“The important bit is that we have the pre-season to get the bond and the team to start playing the way I like.”

Lovett turned things round for the Hillians last season after he took over from Simon Wormull. But there are still elements Lovett would like to improve. He said: “The stats of last season were we scored a lot of goals, but conceded more than I would have wanted, so this will be something that I will address and this can be prevented in many areas of the pitch not just the defence.

“Everyone I have spoken to has shown a keen interest in coming to the Burgess Hill. I get the feeling players sense we will be a club on the up and improving a lot each season.

“Players I speak to know of the club and also keen to play in front of a decent fanbase that creates a really enjoyable atmosphere.”

In a video message to fans on the club’s website, Lovett also thanked the volunteers who have helped get the ground up to standards. He has been to the Green Elephants Stadium during lockdown and has been impressed with what he has seen.

Lovett said: “When pre-season and when the season starts all the pitches should be looking very plush. I have also seen what the volunteers have done down at the ground with the fence panels painted and the turnstiles looking very good. I would like to take this opportunity to say that the work you guys have been doing down there is very much appreciated by us.”
