Cambridge ace heading to Common's big day

The Cambridge United defender will be back at Little Common Football Club for the Ken Cherry Memorial Event.

The event is being held to remember club founder Ken Cherry, who was still chairman at the time of his sudden passing in January, and celebrate Common’s 50th anniversary.

Legge is heading south for the day with a signed shirt bearing Ken’s name on the reverse and even plans to don the boots, albeit only for a short while as Cambridge have games today (Saturday) and Tuesday.

Legge said: “When I heard about Ken’s passing, I asked Russell (Eldridge, Little Common player-manager) about a charity match and wanted to do something for someone who was a massive help for my career.

“Russell and everyone else at the club has organised this great event, and how fitting it is for it to be something that Ken loved (football) and to be played by players past and present who he helped in one way or another develop the talents that they had. This day is a celebration of a man whose love for football touched so many lives.”

Two football matches will be played at Little Common Rec - a veterans’ match at 1pm followed by an under-36s game at 3pm.

The teams will be made up of past and present Common players, and proceeds from the day will go towards a memorial bench for Ken.

The likes of Peter Heritage, Tom and Gerard Moyse, Chris Scott, Adam Day and Craig Willard are expected to play in the veterans’ match, while players such as Lee Carey, Andy Atkin, Scott Ramsay, and Steve and Ricky Mote are set to line-up in the under-36s game.

As well as the football, there will be food, a bar, a raffle and bouncy castle. Anyone who has played for or been involved with the club for the past 50 years is welcome to attend.

Eldridge said: “I’m sure there’s been many players we’ve not been able to contact, but we’ve put in some hard work to make sure it’s going to be a success.

“It will be a good day of celebration for the club and hopefully there will be lots of people there to share some memories. It will be a difficult day for the family as well, but I’m sure Ken will be looking down happy.”

Ken set up Little Common FC in 1966 and was very much the driving force behind its rise over five decades.
