Canvey Island 3, Burgess Hill Town 3: Another point gained but it could have been more

Burgess Hill Town's last away game of the season was a journey to Canvey Island FC for the first time in their history. Ian Chapman re-introduced Chris Smith and Curtis Gayler to the starting line up after the recent loss at home to '˜highflying' Bognor Regis Town FC.

Hillian’s started well and a Dan Pearse shot from outside the box in the first 5 minutes forced a good save from Gough. Shortly after, Darren Budd’ s shot seemed to hit the hand of a Canvey player, but the referee turned down the penalty appeals. Another good save by Gough denied Curtis Gayler, but on 20 minutes the home team nearly took the lead when a 30 yard shot hit the post and the rebound hit Josh James on the back and some how stayed out of the goal.

Hillians took the lead on 35 minutes when a Luc Doherty shot from the right beat Gough and nestled in the far corner of the net. It was 2-0 within minutes when a Will Miles ball found Pat Harding who slotted the ball past the advancing Gough. Then on 42 minutes a well worked move was finished by a Curtis Gayler strike from the edge of the box giving Gough no chance

The home side came out as expected in the second half with something to prove. They pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute when Josh James brought down Chatting in the box, who converted from the penalty spot. In the 63rd minute Josh made a spectacular one handed save from Chatting but unfortunately the home side’s continued pressure paid off when Tuohy out jumped Sam Fisk at the back post to make it 2-3. Two minutes later the scores were level when a deflected shot beat James and a much needed win was in the balance for the Hillian’s with the home side relentless pressure nearly paying off in the final minutes. The final chance of the game fell to the Hillian’s when Dan Pearse’s shot from just outside the box went inches wide.

So, to use a well known football cliche ‘ a game of two halves’ but another much needed point towards BHTFC aim of staying in the Ryman Premier League this season.

MOM Pat Harding - worked hard and took his goal well.
