Capacity turn out enjoys Mel's Milers 10k on a beautiful day

For the first time in its history, the race was sold out, and the entrants were lucky enough to experience glorious blue skies and perfect running conditions.

James Collins, from Haywards Heath Harriers, won in a chip time of 34 mins 58 secs, closely followed by Rebecca Moore in a course record of 35-18. The Chichester Runner was first female and second overall in a brilliant run.

Brighton and Hove’s Louis Taub was second male runner home in 36-06 with 16-year-old Luke Burgess, of Horsham Blue Star Harriers third in an amazing 36-15.

Elsbeth Turner, also of Horsham Blue Stars, was second female in 38-28 and third was Paula Blackledge in 42-28.

The annual event takes place during the Easter period in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School.

Runners start from the historic quadrangle, through the arches, around the grounds and onto the Downs Link, heading towards Southwater. The race continues around the lake, returning to Christ’s Hospital.

It is organised by Mel’s Milers with the help of family and friends and the support of Bluecoats Sports Centre staff. The proceeds from this year’s race will go to Ovarian Cancer Action, who attended the event and distributed the runners with goody bags.

A strong under-18 field was won by Horsham Blue Stars’ Bradley Burke in 38-50, while Amy Mitchell won the female category in 49-07.

Simon Perkins, of Horsham Joggers, won the 40+ category in 37-31 and Michelle Peckham led the ladies home in 44-02.

The Dawn Piechoczek Cup was awarded to Jenny Hughes of Arena 80 for the first 50+ female in 45-00. While Paul Blackmore of Linfield Running Club, just pipped Pete O’Connell for the 50+ male in a time of 37-38.

Lance Quirico, of East Grinstead Tri, won the 60+ in a time of 43-34 and Marion Hemsworth, Hayward Heath Harriers, picked up the female award in 51-38.

In the over-70 category, the ever-youthful Sue Garner won the ladies race in 52-08 and Roger Osgood, of Havant Athletics Club, finished in 50-24.
