The champagne is on ice after a 3-0 win at home to Saltdean on Saturday thanks to a goal from Michael Hendrick and a brace from substitute Danny Hand put Golds to within touching distance of the league crown.

With three games left to play, it would have to be a catastrophic collapse for Littlehampton to now throw away the title.

They would have to lose all three games with second-placed Newhaven winning their remaining two matches to even finish level on points, and Newhaven would still have to make up a goal difference of 24.

Ironically, the two play each other on Saturday with Golds relishing the opportunity to clinch the silverware against their closest challengers in front of their home fans.

After their win over Saltdean, Littlehampton manager Mark Bennett said: “It was 3-0, but it should have been 13-0, if I am honest.

“To be fair, Saltdean are not too good but credit to them, they did not stop trying.

“We missed too many chances but it’s another three points, that’s the important thing, and it’s one point to go now.”
