Chester’s shut-out helps Heath extend their fine run

Broadbridge Heath extended their unbeaten run to six games thanks to a sterling showing from goalkeeper Michael Chester away to AFC Uckfield on Saturday.

He pulled off a number of fine saves in 1-1 draw as the home side netted a late penalty to level up after Scott Weller’s first half goal.

Both side exchanged chances as Merv Bhujun powered a shot from 30 yards that Uckfield stopper Nick Collick did well to save, while at the other end, Chester blocked Drew Grenall as he forced his way through the defence.

The opening goal was scored midway through the half as Tom Familton played a pass into the path of Weller, who cut inside a defender and hit home.

Steve Dallaway was denied by Chester from point-blank range, before, in the final minute of the half, Bhujun dribbled into the penalty area and was pulled back by a defender, but nothing was given.

In the second half, Ollie Moore’s pass allowed Bhujun a free run at goal but the Heath striker’s effort went narrowly wide. Chester then denied Dallaway with the save of the match, diving to his right to push the ball past the post.

An injury to Moore which forced a change of formation and that allowed the home side to have more space in midfield. Chester was again the Heath saviour with another superb save from the lively Scott Taylor.

In the 84th minute, Familton was judged to have fouled a player in the penalty area and Taylor converted the spot kick.

In the final seconds, Bhujun broke away but shot straight at Collick and Piers McDemott’s rebound deflected wide off the keeper.

Heath Manager Steve Painter said: “Michael (Chester) was superb today one particular save to his right was unbelievable.

“We didn’t play well and we were hanging on at times but on this pitch they will cause a lot of teams problems but despite that we should have won the game in the final minute.”
