The Lancers made it four points from the first two games with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Chichester on Monday night, two days after a superb opening day 4-0 home win against Ringmer.

They came agonisingly close to taking maximum points as Chi scored their equaliser deep in stoppage time at Oaklands.

Whittington said: “I am delighted with how things have gone so far and I can’t praise the players enough. We are a completely new team and a lot of the players are still getting to know each other, so to have hit the ground running like we have is great credit to them.”

Whittington opted to make one change to his line-up for the trip to Chi by handing striker Alex Howell a first start for the club and the frontman did not disappoint by giving Lancing the lead just past the hour. He raced onto a neat ball over the top from Ollie Hartley and slotted cooly under the keeper.

The hosts felt aggrieved at going behind after they had a goal of their own chalked off for offside before half-time and that frustration got even worse when they were denied a second strike by the assistant’s flag midway through the second half.

Lancers looked to have snatched the points but Alex Ansa headed home a late free kick to earn Chi a point.
