Clinical Shoreham send ten-man Wick to defeat

Wick Football Club boss Lee Baldwin wants his side to be more clinical after they fell to defeat at Shoreham on Saturday.

Strikes from Callum Donaghey, Jamie Cradock, Tom Burton and Scott Packer sent ten-man Wick to a 4-1 Southern Combination League Premier Division loss.

Dan Simmonds, who returned to play his first Wick game this season, was shown a straight red 20 minutes from time following an off-the-ball incident to round off a tough day for Wick.

Wick boss Baldwin was pleased with some areas in the defeat and said: “If we were a little more clinical then we could well have got ourselves back in the game. After getting it back to 2-1, we had a ten-minute spell in the second half when we were on top.

“Dan Simmonds went clean through and it was a chance I would have expected him to finish. If that one goes in, it could well be a different game then.

“It’s a little frustrating because the vast majority of games we have been in this season, it’s just about us being a lot more clinical.”

A slow start saw Wick two goals down inside the opening 20 minutes. Donaghey opened the scoring on five minutes, before Cradock added a second 13 minutes later.

Wick had a lifeline as Andy Brown’s quickly taken free-kick looped over Nathan Stroomberg’s head five minutes before the break.

Baldwin’s side were on top in the early stages of the second half and should have levelled on 50 minutes. Simmonds was sent racing clear only for his shot to be stopped by Stroomberg.

Burton made Wick pay for that miss by adding a third for Shoreham on the hour.

Things got worse ten minutes later as Simmonds was shown a straight red after clashing with a Mussels defender.

A tough afternoon was then rounded off as Packer made it 4-1 15 minutes from time.
