Clymping lose at Shoreham

CLYMPING Football Club exited the Brighton Charity Cup on Tuesday night, despite a spirited showing in their narrow 2-1 defeat at County League Division 1 strugglers Shoreham.

It was Mussels’ first win since November, but Clymping manager Darran Atkins, while disappointed, stated he has bigger fish to fry.

He said: “It was a good effort, but the league’s our priority, so we’re not too fussed. We held our own, losing Brad Johnson again was a blow but I was quite pleased and March is a big month for us.”

Shoreham went ahead in a controversial fashion on 18 minutes. Owen Callaghan’s cross from the right wing was flicked on by Grant Philpott, who looked offside, but Clymping keeper Steve May did not claim it, and Dominic Shepherd bundled in from four yards.

Clymping’s Tom Woodward crashed home to equalise on 25 minutes.

Mussels went back ahead on 65 minutes when Shepherd slotted home at the near post from 10 yards, before he squandered a golden chance for his hat-trick when his spot-kick was well saved by Steve May, after a Rob Browne foul.

CLYMPING: May; Higgs, Browne, Johnson, Lee; Harris, Atkins, Gordon, Garvey; Woodward, Duffin. Subs: Millar (Johnson 45), Longhurst (Gordon 60), Perkins (Atkins 82), James, Sweeney.
