COLUMN: The Women’s World Cup – inspire a generation

The FIFA 2015 Women’s World Cup is currently being played in host country Canada, with the England Women’s team considered a strong contender to go far in the tournament.

The fact that it is being televised nationally with a large focus on the players has made this World Cup easily accessible for anyone who is interested.

A demographic I’m sure are watching with baited breath is the aspiring girls footballers playing football for school teams and local clubs – being one of them myself.

In Sussex, girls football has grown, especially over the past 5 years. Sussex school teams have gained popularity and support both from players and school friends watching the matches.

For example, the Sussex Schools Football Association hosted four girls’ football county cup finals at Lewes FC in May this year– a notion that would have shocked me five years ago because we never had the chance to play football finals in an established football club stadium.

Women’s football is undeniably growing in popularity with young players and this could have a correlation with the increased support for the Women’s World Cup because England ladies players have demonstrated that hard work can lead to success in football - and other sports too.

England’s match against Mexico was very positive. The ladies won 2-1 with a goal from Fran Kirby, who showed flair and skill throughout the match. The second goal was scored by substitute Karen Carney with a header Alex Greenwood’s cross.

The quality shown by these girls was impressive and very encouraging; the fact that the substitutes contributed so positively to winning the match demonstrates the strength of the England women’s team, and provides a strong foundation for the ladies to work on during this tournament.

And as success will hopefully continue for the team, aspirations for young girls will continue to develop through Sussex school teams, local clubs and even centre of excellence facilities – providing opportunities for girls with talent worth scouting.

Let’s hope England Women’s success continues throughout the World Cup!
