The Commoners lost 2-0 against fellow Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One side Langney Wanderers in round one of the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Common made a strong start to a match played at Eastbourne United AFC as Langney's pitch is currently not in use. Lewis Hole twice had the ball in the net during the opening 15 minutes, but both goals were ruled out for offside.

Jamie Crone saw an effort parried round the post when he outsprinted the home defence and Jake Sherwood headed just over from a corner.

However, it was the home side who opened the scoring in the 18th minute when the Common defence failed to deal with a ball into the box and a scuffed effort from Nathan Crabb found its way into the bottom corner.

Common - semi-finalists last season - pressed for an equaliser, but despite enjoying the greater share of possession, they were unable to break through the home defence.

Wanderers doubled their lead on the stroke of half time when Crabb lobbed an effort into the roof of the net from the edge of the area.

Once again the Commoners enjoyed large spells of possession in the second period, albeit without really threatening the home goal.

Crone and Sherwood had strong penalty appeals waved away, while Russell Eldridge saw a long range effort spilled. At the other end, Common goalkeeper Matt Cruttwell made two fine saves late on as the Commoners pressed to find a way back into the match.

Common: Cruttwell, Cooper, Aston (Sloat), Eldridge, Ammoun, Cruikshank, Denny, Sherwood (Curteis), Hole, Crone, Burgon (Saville).
