Common boss out to prove point

Common manager Linch believes his team is as good as its crosstown rivals - if not better when on their game - even though Bexhill have won both previous meetings this season and are nine places higher up the table.

Linch said: “When we’re playing well, I think we’re as good as Bexhill if not better. We’ve just not been consistent enough over the course of the season. Last time we played Bexhill, I think we deserved to win that game really.”

The match Linch is referring to is the Hastings & District FA Senior Cup semi-final at The Polegrove on Tuesday March 15 when a mixed Bexhill side edged out a near full strength Common line-up 2-1.

Bexhill, who Linch likened to “the old Wimbledon” after that game, also won 4-0 in the Sussex County Football League Division Two meeting between the clubs at The Polegrove on Monday December 27.

Their manager Gerard Moyse said: “No I don’t think they’re as good as us. I think the league table doesn’t lie. They might’ve been as good as last year, but they’re not as good this year. I want us to get fourth so we need to win it. If we get fourth it’s a good year.”

Elsewhere on Monday, Rye United will be out for revenge when they travel to Three Bridges in Sussex Division One. Bridges, of course, beat Rye in the final of the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup on Good Friday. Kick-off is 11.30am.

And Westfield will be hoping to reproduce the attacking form they showed in their thrilling 5-4 victory away to Rustington when they go to Seaford Town in Division Two. Kick-off is 3pm.
