The Commoners are still involved in two of this season’s knockout competitions and will host Arundel in the one remaining Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup last 16 tie tonight (Tuesday).

Assuming the weather doesn’t intervene, it will be Common’s first home game since the passing of their chairman on January 7 and it’s sure to be an emotional occasion.

“We want to try and win a trophy for him,” said Eldridge, who will be available again after a one-game ban. “It’s going to be difficult, but everyone’s got that bit between their teeth and wants to make him proud.

“It’s going to be a very emotional night at the Rec, but we will be wanting to put on a good performance and get into the next round, and for Ken as well.

“When we played at home he was always standing behind the goal and the games coming up will obviously be very different.”

Arundel are 11th in the Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Premier Division, while Common are sixth in Division One but they’ve beaten two higher level clubs in the cups this season.

Eldridge added: “Being at home it’s a winnable game and it’s a really good opportunity for us to get into the quarter-finals, which would be a fantastic achievement for us.”

At stake for the winners is a last eight tie away to Ryman Football League Division One South high-flyers Worthing. Kick-off at the Rec is 7.15pm.

Temperatures are forecast to remain very low today, however, and news of any planned pitch inspections - if there are any - will appear on this website.
