Jamie Crone scored a hat-trick as Common made it back-to-back Southern Combination Football League Division One wins against a Sidlesham side which played most of the match with nine men.

The Bank Holiday weekend saw Jake Sherwood and Steve Mote away on holiday so Jared Lusted and Crone came into the starting line-up.

It was the hosts who made the early running with two deliveries into the area calmly dealt with by Matt Cruttwell before the Commoners took the lead with their first attack of the match. A delightful free kick across the face of the goal from Dan Estherby was met by the head of Jared Lusted, who made no mistake from two yards.

Common almost doubled their lead moments later when a long range Paul Feakins effort crashed against the crossbar before being hooked to safety. The hosts almost saw themselves level in the 10th minute, but Cruttwell saved well from a header at the far post.

Lusted saw an effort drift wide of the post before Common doubled their lead. Hole’s flick found Crone, who beat the goalkeeper before rolling the ball into the empty net.

Any thoughts of a Sidlesham comeback were given a massive blow in the 25th minute when one of their defenders was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Feakins. Common soon added a third following good work from Lusted, who found Crone in the area to knock in his second of the afternoon.

The home side’s miserable afternoon soon got worse when they were reduced to nine men minutes before the interval following a second yellow card for their full-back.

Common added a fourth goal just 14 seconds after half time. Hole raced onto a throughball and stroked it into the far corner of the net.

The hosts did not make things easy for the visitors and continued to push forward in search of a goal. The Commoners kept the ball well, but had to wait to add to their tally despite a long range effort from Martin Denny and Crone appearing to be brought down as he rounded the goalkeeper.

The fifth goal came in the 70th minute when Lusted’s crossfield ball to substitute Stuart Collier saw him burst into the box before cutting the ball back for Hole to fire into the net.

Five soon became six when Crone completed his hat-trick as he raced through on goal before rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home. The hosts did grab a late consolation that their effort and endeavour deserved when a shot from the edge of the area nestled into the bottom corner of the net eight minutes from time.

Common: Cruttwell, Ammoun, Haward, Feakins (Wells), McEniry, Eldridge (Denny), Foster, Lusted, Hole, Crone, Estherby (Collier).
