Common are due to host higher grade Chichester City in the quarter-finals of the Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup tonight (Tuesday).

“It’s something we’re looking forward to,” said Common player-manager Russell Eldridge. “As we’ve said before, opportunities to progress in cups don’t come along very often.

“We’ve got an opportunity to reach a semi-final, which would be a fantastic achievement for everyone, but we can’t afford to get ahead of ourselves.”

Common are eighth in Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One and Chichester are sixth in the Premier Division. Both clubs, incidentally, won the team of the month award in their respective divisions for November.

Common have already knocked out two higher level clubs to reach this stage, both after extra-time, and Chichester will face a difficult journey across the county for a 7.15pm kick-off at the Rec.

“Chichester are going to have to travel quite a long distance,” continued Eldridge. “It doesn’t mean it will become an easy game, but it does give us a good opportunity.”

Common have won four of their last five fixtures in all competitions, the latest of which was a crushing 10-0 league victory away to Saltdean United on Saturday when they scored eight goals in the second half.

The Commoners have also won seven of their nine cup ties so far this season, and are through to the quarter-finals of the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup and last 16 of the Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup.

Chichester are in red hot form having won all of their last seven encounters in all competitions, scoring 27 goals and conceding just four in the process.

At stake for the winners of a match postponed at the first time of asking on December 1 is a semi-final against a Lancing side which lies fourth in the Premier Division. Broadbridge Heath and Newhaven will contest the other last four tie.
