He said: “It was really around our penetration from creating attack moments.

"We didn’t look forward and play forward enough in the first half. Also, our movement was too straight and too static ahead of the ball, so that improved in the second half.

“I think also our press was a little bit too passive at times and maybe paid them a little bit too much respect which is natural human behaviour.

"But, second half you can see when you’re really competitive and compete against any level of opposition you can be effective and I think we saw that in the second half which we’re really pleased with.”

The comeback was also helped by Betsy’s second-half substitutions.

He believes the strength in depth of the Crawley squad is ‘imperative’ going into the new season.

"In each position you need two players competing at the same level,” he said.

"You can’t have a squad where you have one player who is a really high level and the one underneath is well below, it’s never going to work.

“It’s never going to help us because we’re going to pick up injuries, suspensions.

"We’re going to have players on poor performance and those players that come in and step in need to be ready and you have five subs also this season.

“That’s why we’re working really hard on our recruitment to make sure we bring in the right players in the right positions.”
