Crawley Town boss John Yems says it seems like money wins in sport these days.

Yems was reacting to the proposal of Project Big Picture, which was devised by Liverpool and Manchester United and advocates fundamental reform of the game – and would change football as we know it.

The plans would see “big” clubs control the running of the top flight in return for redistributing greater funding down the football pyramid.

EFL chairman Rick Parry has publicly endorsed the change which would involve Football League clubs taking 25% of future Premier League deals.

Football fans have been left angered and stunned by the proposals - which has been labelled a ‘power-grabbing new low for English football’.

And Yems sounded sceptical at the plans.

He said: “You could read Charles Dickens and Hans Christian Anderson and they would come up with better ideas. I suppose they have nothing better to do with their millions.

“It would be nice if they just got their heads together to help the lower leagues out, let alone redistributing the money.

“It seems more and more that money has to win in sport now. Let’s just hope they remember when Liverpool signed the likes of Ian Rush, Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence, they all came from the lower leagues.

“Let’s just hope they don’t forget all that.”

Yems is preparing his side for a visit from League Two league leaders Morecambe as they look to bounce back from their defeat at Cheltenham Town last Saturday.

Yems said: “They are top of the league. You aint top of the league for no reason. You learn from every game and you look forward to the next one. We will work hard this week and set up to beat Morecambe.”

Yems added to his squad this week with the signings of striker Max Watters and full-back Nicholas Tsaroulla.

The team came in for criticism for their performance at Cheltenham from fans. But Yems said: “It’s very easy to be negative, they can moan and groan, but get behind the club. The ones who are always moaning and groaning aren’t real supporters anyway.”
