The Magpies are currently a lowly 18th place, five places and four points below Reds, despite having a healthy budget.
Their poor form saw the sacking of manager Richard Moniz in November which was followed by the appointment of former Crystal Palace midfielder Jamie Fullarton this week.
Barnard said: “I think they’ve got a big budget there and have bought some really good players.
“They are probably not where they want to be in the table but teams that have just got new managers are dangerous.
“They will come out and want to perform for the new manager and keep their place in the team.
“It’s going to be a really hard game because they have some good players, like I said.
“It will be difficult, but if we can work hard hopefully we can show a bit of quality and get the win.”
Barnard is also aware of former Crawley Town striker Izale McLeod who was sold by Reds to Notts County for a six-figure some at the start of the season.
McLeod was topscorer for Crawley last season in League 1 and is currently their top scorer with nine goals in all competitions.
Barnard said: “I know him just from pre-season really.
“He was here when I first came training and he’s good player who has a good career and scored a lot of goals.
“He did well here so we will have to keep an eye on him because he is dangerous; he’s a goal scorer. Our defenders will have to be on their toes.”
