Carney brings glory to Three Bridges against young Crawley Town

A last minute goal by skipper Lee Carney gave Bridges a deserved victory against a young Crawley Town line-up.

Reds had only two professionals in action during the first half, goalkeeper Jonathan Maddison and centre-back Alex Malins and the rest of the sqaud was made up of youth players and trialists.

Bridges could have won by a lot more had they taken some of the many chances they created.

But their first decent chance, after seven minutes, owed more to the bravery of Reds keeper Maddison as he made a great block to deny Marcus Elliott after some great work by Abu Touray had created the opening.

Maddison did well also to tip away a long range effort from the outstanding Williams Peauroux, while he then held onto a crisp effort from Elliott Romain.

At the other end, the impressive Malachi Robinson tried his luck from distance but shot wide before Scott Melville almost opened the account when his deflected effort had Bridges’ keeper Rob Woodward going the wrong way, but he recovered to snaffle the ball.

The first half finished with a swift counter-attack by Crawley that ended with James Grant brilliantly blocking the final shot from Jordan Adekunle.

Bridges’ Elliott Romain might well have had five or six goals on his own. He was a constant threat with his strong running and desire, but he saw shots go high and wide, and even a follow up header went wide, but second half keeper Chris Smith also pushed away his stinging drive.

Touray also forced Smith to a good low save following an ultra fast move, while Hassan Nalbant’s first touch, a header from Peauroux’s corner, was just about cleared. Woodward held onto a decent strike from Kieran Woodley at the other end, and it looked as though Town might snatch a win in the dying minutes as Woodward was forced to make excellent saves to deny Nat Jarvis and Woodley again.

But, with time running out, Smith brilliantly tipped over an excellent hit by Alex Parsons, and from the subsequent corner, former Crawley Town left back Nigel Brake crossed for Carney to lash home from close range.
