Crawley should have more points from bottom sides, defender McFadzean says

Defender Kyle McFadzean said the first-half performance against Oldham was ‘not acceptable’ and admitted Crawley should have taken more points off the teams in the bottom half of the table.

Including Saturday’s defeat, Reds have dropped 29 points against sides in the bottom half of the league table, compared with the 26 points they have dropped against the top 12 sides in League One.

McFadzean was quick to praise Oldham’s brand of counter-attacking football which saw them win 1-0, but felt the attitude of the Crawley players fell well short of the standard they set in beating Wolves just five days before.

He said: “I don’t know why (the performance was bad) but it’s not acceptable and the lads know that and we need to bounce back quickly on Tuesday.

“The weather didn’t help us, it started hailing at the start. You saw us second half, we should have been like that in the first half and if we had we might be sitting here with three points.

“I don’t know what it is, it could be the mentality of the players but we should be coming in to every football game, we shouldn’t be looking at Oldham and thinking we should beat these, we don’t need to put that much in.

“We should be doing it every game like we did against Wolves. I think the lads do, I think we just got off to a rubbish start today.”

Since Reds returned to action following a month-long weather break they have taken a very respectable 15 points from eight games, played within the space of only 29 days. But dropped points in that run against sides like Gillingham, Shrewsbury, Stevenage and now the struggling Latics have left a feeling of what could have been, especially with sixth-placed Peterborough continuing to drop points, as they did again on Saturday.

“I don’t know what the other lads think before a game but I know I take everybody just the same as every match,” said McFadzean, one of the few Crawley players to impress at Boundary Park. “Oldham are a good team, they’ve got some good players and they play some good football and they do counter-attack.

“We didn’t really have as many chances as we did against Gillingham, Shrewsbury and Stevenage, we had easy chances there as well. But we had two chances against Wolves and scored (both). We should have a lot more points definitely. It is frustrating but you can’t do anything, we can’t get those points back now.”

Looking forward though, the talented central defender is relishing another game at the Broadfield against a massive club when in-form Sheffield United come to town on Tuesday.

McFadzean came through the youth ranks at Bramall Lane and still supports the Blades, though he insists he’ll only have eyes on another Crawley win against former Premier League opposition.
