He was unveiled at a packed press conference at the Checkatrade.com Stadium this afternoon.

The 45-year-old has got a two-year deal with Reds.

Previous manager John Gregory left the club permanently 11 days ago and since then at least 30 credible applicants for the position were received.

Gregory, who has previously managed Aston Villa, stood down at Christmas on a temporary basis to have open heart surgery.

Former Liverpool and Wales star Dean Saunders came in as interim boss.

He fought a battle against relegation which despite improved performances and results ended on the last day of the season with relegation to League 2.

Saunders turned down an offer to manager Crawley next season and last week was installed as manager of League 1 club Chesterfield.
