Crawley Town looking for FA Cup boost

Crawley Town manager John Gregory sees this week’s two cup games against Yeovil on Saturday and then on Tuesday at home to Gillingham in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy as a great chance to give the club a boost.

He said: “It’s a great way for this club to gain some extra income. I’ve talked about it from day one – it’s hard to maintain the financial side of things at Crawley Town.

“There are many big teams in our division who have huge home attendances which supplements their income. For us it’s a way to try to create income.

“We have the JPT after Yeovil, we’re playing Gillingham here on Tuesday night and that’s starting to sound a little bit sexy because it’s the quarter-finals. “After that it’s the semi-final, believe it or not. But at the end of all that is a trip to Wembley and as Peterborough will tell you after last season, it is financially beneficial.

“The FA Cup and the JPT offer us a chance to bring in that much-needed income because we do need to improve the playing side. Gary (Johnson) has made a couple of signings but I don’t know whether they can play in the FA Cup.

“But he is obviously trying to improve their league form. They got a point on Saturday and they are a tough team to play against.

“Our pedigree goes without saying. I think everyone who knows about Crawley knows about their cup exploits.

“We beat Derby County here who were Championship to earn the tie against Manchester United and that will live in folklore for many, many years to come. Probably forever to be honest. And also we had a huge payday.

“It’s a clash of two giant-killers in many respects but one of us isn’t going to be in the draw for the next round. And I hope it’s Yeovil.”
