They were talking to Dean Saunders yesterday (Tuesday) about coming back to lead Reds in League 2 next season.

His short-term contract ended at the end of the season and it is believed he would accept an offer if he is given a budget large enough to challenge for promotion.

Crawley have received more than 30 decent applicants since Gregory’s departure was announced on Saturday, along with head coach Paul Groves and his entire backroom staff.

The club have said they will also be speaking to other candidates about the manager’s position.

Chief executive Michael Dunford said: “We are having discussions with Dean Saunders this week. We have been inundated with applicants with in excess of 30 genuine ones from credible people.

“We may have another couple of people in to talk to as well.

“We are hoping to make a decision in the next ten days.”
