“We were beaten by the better team. We looked tired and 3-0 makes you look more tired.

“Just overall as a group we’ve got a lot of players carrying injuries.

“The second goal was not a good goal, the third goal was not a good goal.”

Saunders was impressed with aspects of the display.

He said: “I have to take the positives out of the performance. That was the best football we’ve played.

“We had players out there who had to play two games in three days and struggled. Physically they looked quicker and stronger than us.

“We’ve had a run of games against difficult opponents..

“We looked tired. Matt Harrold is struggling with his achilles and Dean Morgan is not fit yet.”

Saunders reckoned they will have to work on their defending.

He said: “We’ve got to defend better than that - their goals were terrible goals to concede. The first goal was a straight forward flick-on.

“We spend all week working on our shape and a long ball undoes us!

“Doyle and the big French boy up front will cause most defences trouble and had a bit too much for us on the night.”
