Dicker: ‘It was a blatant penalty’

Midfielder Gary Dicker felt Crawley were “punished” for not taking their early chances in the Reds’ 1-1 draw at Swindon Town on Tuesday evening.

The visitors had first half attempts from Jamie Proctor, Andy Drury and Matt Tubbs, but failed to capitalise on an encouraging start in Wiltshire.

“Maybe it’s a good point away from home but we wanted the three points,” said former Brighton and Rochdale man Dicker.

“The chances we had, we’ve got to put one or two of them away. We give them a mountain to climb if we do and we were punished with the sloppy goal,” the 28-year-old continued.

Another opportunity for the Reds came in the form of a penalty appeal after Proctor was felled by Swindon captain Darren Ward. Dicker believes it should have been a definite spot kick to John Gregory’s side.

“It was a blatant penalty. There’s no reason why he (Proctor) should go down; he’s six yards out, he’s opened the goal up and the defender’s on his backside.”

Dicker found himself in the unusual position of right midfield when he put a superb ball in for Tubbs’ equaliser with 80 minutes on the clock, and reflecting on the goal he commented: “I got myself on the right wing and if you put it into the space Tubbsy’s going to be around there. He (Tubbs) smacked it in, it was a great finish and we deserved it.

“It opened up when their goal went in; we had to go for it,” the Irish midfielder said.

“Four points from six away from home is a good return and we’ve got two big home games coming up and we want to win them.”
