The deal went through with no fee publicised but reports at the time estimated he went for betweeen £200-£300,000.

During a webchat with fans on the club’s website, Dunford disagreed with one fan’s valuation that McFadzean, who was part of both Crawley’s promotions, was worth £1 million.

The questioner, known as Jack asked: “Why did we sell McFadzean so cheap when he was a million pound player and we needed the money. That would have allowed a better budget to get better players.”

Dunford answered: “Hi Jack, £1m? I’m not sure even Kyle would agree with that assessment of his value! Kyle wanted to move back north and MK Dons produced the best bid. Which is why he went there. Player valuations are all subjective.

“We might think a player is worth £500k but if clubs are only prepared to pay half that for instance that is his value, especially if the player wants a change of club.”
