He said Bristol kept pushing until the end of 90 minutes while hardworking Crawley could not get a shot on target.

Gregory said: “We basically had the game in the palm of our hands, sitting comfortably, and we ended up conceding in the last few minutes of the game.

“I’d rather it be somebody else than us and we tend to have these hard luck stories. We’re talking about one mistake we have made in the whole 90 minutes which has cost us three points.

“If you look at it all, our players went for the first ball, everybody wanted to be the hero and they possibly played with their hearts not their heads. I think there were about four yellow shirts that all went for the first header and it came to the back post and straight past Lewis Price.

“I cannot fault the effort and the enthusiasm that our boys showed today. They’ve worked exceptionally hard. That’s why they are so devastated.

“To have taken a point away from home would have been like a victory for us. But it wasn’t to be.

“Bristol kept going right up until the final whistle.

“I’m just disappointed the way my strikers gave the ball away in the first half without having a chance on goal.

“The top players make good decisions about who to pass it to and that’s where we went wrong.

“We need to take a lot of the positive elements from today’s game.”
